Collisions carry the costs according to Bishop Skinner Marine

Boat insurance specialist Bishop Skinner Marine’s claims data reveal collisions to be the most frequent and highest valued cause for claims received in 2015.

The data from the BSM claims team showed almost a third of all claims received last year were as a result of collisions, 70% of which involved a third party. 65% of all collisions involved yachts, with only 20% of all collisions being a result of racing incidents. Unsurprisingly, 80% of claims occurred during the spring-summer season as owners, enthusiasts and sailors take their boats back out onto the waters.

The findings highlight the need for caution from boat users of all types and the necessity of obeying Colregs to ensure safe and enjoyable passage in the water. For more tips and helpful advice to stay safe this summer read our regular blogs here

Paul Birch, Managing Director Bishop Skinner Marine commented: “After the excitement and success of BAR at the Americas Cup World Series in Portsmouth now is a great time to be on the water. It is important, however to be wary of other boat riders. Collisions with third parties are common, whether you’re racing or not you should pay particular attention to Colregs – the rules of the sea. Although you might have the right of way for example, everyone is responsible for avoiding a collision.

Being out on the water can be one of the most calming experiences or equally one of the most exhilarating. Observing these rules and techniques will help ensure the most enjoyment is had and the pitfalls are avoided.”
